Outreach and Missions Plan

Our Goals:
• We are the Presence of Christ when we Reach Out into the community, so that we are recognized as an inviting and supportive presence.
We are the Presence of Christ as a ‘Church on a Mission’ to serve others near and far, providing opportunities for all to serve, so that the love of Christ is experienced by those we serve and we who serve.

Outreach and Missions Activities to achieve the above goals for 2013:

Short – Term Projects

Out of area mission trip

Team of women and men for a 4 day mission to Aurora, North Carolina to provide life-essential home repairs or similar services to others impacted by Hurricane Irene in August , 2011. Keys: immersion in the project, exposure outside Lunenburg, spiritual formation
. When: February 28 – March 3, 2013

Kits for Conference
Gather materials and supplies for the UMCOR birthing and cleaning kits to deliver at Annual Conference. Hold a “packing day” on a Sunday in early June to assemble the kits. Serves as both a missional and community-building outreach activity.
When: May-June

Caring Contributions
Fundraiser for ‘Neighbors’ project (below) and an opportunity for community outreach: an unpriced – donations yard sale, in conjunction with a donation-drawing or blind auction, for a quilt or other donated items.
When: Saturday, May 11 (Sat before Mother’s Day)

Neighbors-Helping-Neighbors
Participate with Kenbridge UMC and other Lunenburg churches and agencies in a two-day local service project. Provides an opportunity for participants to invest of themselves in being the Presence of Christ to neighbors.
When: Friday – Saturday, a weekend of June

Thank-You Neighbor Worship
Sunday of the ‘Neighbors’ project weekend, worship on the church lawn with a covered dish luncheon to follow. Time of celebration of the mission of the church.
When: A Sunday in June

Supplies for School Project-
The gathering of donations of school supplies to help those children unable to help themselves, contributing to the education of Lunenburg’s youngest citizens. We will do this either in partnership with another effort or independently.
When: July, and possibly a replenishing effort in January

Samaritans Purse Shoe Boxes
Gift boxes packaged for children around the world. In 2012 we prepared 25 boxes.
When: October

Homecoming Weekend
In addition to the Sunday worship, we will perform a Day-of-Service on Saturday at a parishioner’s or immediate ‘neighbor’s’ home.
When: Second Saturday in October or when Homecoming established?

Salvation Army Projects
The community of faith gathers to support the local community in need in November and December. We share our abundant blessings through the collecting of non-perishable food items, sorting and bagging food for distribution, Angel Tree gifts and Senior Stockings.
When: November – early December

Ongoing Missions

Tutoring Children
Provide educational support for elementary school students on an ongoing basis. Sharing our time in giving students attention and re-enforcing their classroom instruction encourages their success now and in the future. Opportunities are anticipated for occasional and regular participation.
When: Beginning late winter – early spring

Children’s Outreach Activities
Involving the Antioch children in an outreach activity. Purpose is to teach them discipleship and service – doing for others, in a fun and creative, age-appropriate activity. Involving the youth of the church to assist reinforces this purpose for the teens, too. These activities are planned during the worship hour, following Children’s Time, so that parents may experience a diversion-free worship.
When: January 6, February 10, TBD

People in Need, Response Undetermined

The following are areas of concern to the Committee but how we should respond is not yet determined:

• Outreach to our Elders (senior citizens): options include involvement with children’s activities, providing recorded worship services to homebound
• Tutoring or participating in services to improve Adult Literacy in the Lunenburg community
• Financial support for international mission, specifically Malaria Nets
• Financial support for local missions, specifically Madeline’s House, Lunenburg Health Services
• Social Justice issue of sex trafficking in this country
